Rain in Austria? Try these fun activities!
Rain can affect your holiday in Austria, whether you're there in spring, autumn, or even summer. Usually, the skies clear up quickly, but sometimes the rain lingers in the mountains. To ensure your mood stays sunny, we've compiled a list of enjoyable activities for bad weather, excursions, and tips for a rainy holiday.
Summer Card
Have you booked a chalet with a summer card? Check what is included with your summer card and read more about the Nationalpark Sommercard, Lungau Card, Joker Card and Hochkönig Card.
Museum
If you're staying near Bramberg am Wildkogel, a visit to the Museum Bramberg is definitely worth it. Here, you can admire impressive crystals and minerals. The museum also features interactive games for children, exhibitions on mountain life, traditional costumes, and antique carriages.
Another recommendation is the Nationalpark Museum in Mittersill. This museum offers a unique indoor experience of the flora and fauna of the Hohe Tauern National Park!
Enjoy Austrian cuisine
Treat yourself to a visit to a local restaurant or guesthouse. Our blog on Austrian specialities provides plenty of inspiration for what to order. The local bakeries, or Konditoreien, are also worth a visit. Choose from a wide range of delicious pastries and pair them with a nice cup of coffee or Austrian herbal tea. Or cook your own meals and enjoy them in your chalet!
Have fun underground
From your cosy holiday chalet near Dienten am Hochkönig or Hinterthal, it’s about a 30-minute drive to Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world, which you can visit from May to October. Make sure to wear waterproof clothing before entering the cave; after the cable car, there’s a 20-minute walk to the entrance. Put on something warm when you arrive and enjoy the beautifully illuminated underground ice formations, tunnels, and lakes with a guide. Due to the many stairs, this excursion is less suitable for young children.
For children aged four and up, a visit to the Hallein salt mines is great fun. Travel into the mines on a train, slide down wooden planks into the dark depths, and sail across the fairy-tale illuminated salt lake on a raft. You’ll learn a lot about the history of salt and its significance for the Salzburg region.
Enjoy Quality Time Together
On holiday, you have more time to do enjoyable things together that might not get as much attention in everyday life. Watch a film or bring games with you and play board games or cards on rainy days. Even grocery shopping can be an adventure, as you can discover new products. Prepare a meal together, bake a delicious cake, or make your own pizza with Austrian cheeses. Many of ChaletsPlus's holiday homes have an oven and are fully equipped for a cosy baking or cooking afternoon.
Seek Out Water
Accept that you might get wet and visit the Krimml Waterfalls on a rainy day. It’s peaceful and impressive, and you can get close to the waterfall since you’re already wet! It is said that the mist from the waterfalls has healing properties. In addition to walking to the Krimml Waterfalls, rafting and kayaking are also great options during light rain. Afterwards, you can enjoy various treats from Austrian cuisine or a good drink!
Another option is to visit an (indoor) swimming pool, such as the Kristallbad, which is close for holidaymakers in the Zillertal or Wildkogel Arena. For many of our accommodations in Wald im Pinzgau, access to this pool is even free. Besides the pool with a slide, there are spa and sauna facilities for optimal relaxation. If you choose a holiday home with a sauna, rain is of course a perfect excuse to stay indoors and enjoy relaxing luxury at home.
