Top 5: Highest Mountains of Salzburgerland
Austria is known as one of the most beautiful mountain countries in Europe. With the impressive Alps, the country offers both high, splendid and unique peaks. In this blog, we take you on a journey through the province of Salzburgerland and explore its highest mountains. Curious? Keep reading to discover everything!
5. Hoher Tenn
In fifth place is the Hoher Tenn, standing at 3,368 metres, located in the centre of the province. This mountain is known for its rugged peaks and challenging routes for climbers and hikers, making it a popular destination for adventure seekers.
4. Großer Bärenkopf
In fourth place, just outside the podium, is the peak with the most remarkable name in this top 5: the Großer Bärenkopf. The name is said to refer to a physical resemblance of the peak to the head of a bear, at least as seen by the local population and early explorers. Another theory suggests that the name might come from the presence of bears in the region in the past.
The Großer Bärenkopf, at 3,396 metres high, is located near Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner, and is climbable! The challenging routes start in villages such as Kaprun and require the necessary technical skills, good fitness, and some experience. The best time for climbing is during the summer months, when the weather conditions are generally more favourable.
3. Klockerin
The bronze medal goes to Klockerin, a striking peak within the Hohe Tauern National Park. At an impressive 3,425 meters above sea level, Klockerin is known for its steep and rocky character. Due to these characteristics, the routes to climb Klockerin are generally less crowded than those of nearby peaks. Nonetheless, the mountain offers stunning views of surrounding glaciers, valleys, and other alpine landscapes.
2. Großes Wiesbachhorn
Großes Wiesbachhorn, the "big brother" of Kleines Wiesbachhorn, rises impressively to a height of 3,564 meters and is part of the Glockner Group. Großes Wiesbachhorn is not only geographically interesting but also geologically. The area shows tectonic activities and has been shaped by glacial processes, offering researchers a unique opportunity to study the evolution of mountain landscapes and climate effects.
1. Großvenediger
With its impressive height of 3,666 meters, Großvenediger is undisputedly number one! Located in the eastern part of the Hohe Tauern, this mountain marks the highest point of Salzburgerland. Surrounded by various glaciers such as Venedigerkees, Obersulzbachkees, and Krimmlerkees, Großvenediger attracts tourists like a magnet!
An overview of the top 5 highest mountains:
