Sun, snow and family fun on the Tauern south-side

The ski area of Grosseck-Speiereck around Mauterndorf and St. Michael is a unique place with many surprises in store. Between Radstädter and Schladminger Tauern and the Gurktaler Alps is the small but fine Lungau, which lies on the sunny side of the province of Salzburg. Here, right in the southeast, the Niederen Tauern are still quite high - and thus absolutely snow guaranteed. At the same time, you get to enjoy more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Austria!

The excellent facilities for kids make this ski area ideal for families with (small) children.

Small scale

This area is a bit smaller scale making it ideal for families, seniors and beginners.

About Grosseck Speiereck

The ski slopes in Grosseck-Speiereck range from 1100 to 2400 metres above sea level. The highest and longest of them starts at the Speiereck summit and runs for 9 kilometres over 1,400 metres to St. Michael in the valley floor. A real challenge - and a real must for experts. The valley descent to Mauterndorf is still a proud 5.5 kilometres long. Both downhill runs are a real treat, especially when the sun is shining all the time.

The ski area has a total of 50 kilometres of very varied slopes, all of which are snow-covered - plus off-slope possibilities and deep-snow slopes. However, half of the slopes are easy to ski, making them a wonderful playground for families, beginners and returning skiers. There are training opportunities for youngsters and practice lifts - and really good care for children from the age of one and a half!

The Lungau is a very rural and quiet area with many sights. Tourism has long been important here all year round, which is why there is such a well-developed infrastructure for holiday guests. The area is rather small. But the lifts have a high capacity and are open from November to May, so skiers and snowboarders always get their money's worth. Quieter sports such as cross-country skiing and ice skating are on offer. Ski tours and snowshoe hikes are offered, while there's wellness attractions and swimming fun to be had. Truly, there's something for everyone to enjoy here.

Other winter activities

Snowboarding

The Katschberg ski area has a halfpipe and there is also a fun park in the Fanningberg ski area. In the ski area Obertauern lies the Snowpark The Spot with several Easy-Lines and Medium-Lines. Snowboarding is also possible away from the slopes.

Cross-country skiing

The Lungau is a Mecca for cross-country enthusiasts. A total of around 30 cross-country ski runs with approx. 150km of classic tracks are at your disposal here. Some of them are high-altitude trails, some of which are even snow-covered.
Mauterndorf, in particular, has very extensive and beautiful cross-country trails, some of which can be accessed directly in the village. They all lie at an altitude of at least 1,000 metres. Most of them are easy to ski on, but there are also more demanding slopes - both for classic and skating fans.

Tobogganing

There are 14 toboggan runs in the Lungau alone. Some of them can be reached by bus or lift, others can be hiked. The cableways are up to 2,000 metres high, some are equipped with floodlights, offer sledge rental and night rides.

Après-ski

Friends of après-ski meet in the "Fly Agaric", a bar with a sun terrace where the warming evening sun spreads a touch of southern feeling. Afterwards, you can go to the huts and restaurants. Grosseck-Speiereck is also more relaxed and comfortable when it comes to après-ski.

Even more winter fun

The winter hiking trail on the mountain, which leads from the Grosseck cable car mountain station to the Sonnenbahn mountain station, is famous. A prepared, approx. 2.5km long winter hiking trail for walkers and snowshoe hikers awaits you here. Enjoy the comfortable ascent with the cable car and experience holiday enjoyment at 2000 metres above sea level!

There is also plenty of other space in the region for gentle nature experiences. The riding and horse-drawn sleigh offers are very popular with families. Ice sports are not neglected either. If you can't see any more snow, then simply take a break in one of the pleasant wellness stations and baths.
