Short Portrait

St. Margarethen is typical of the Lungau region in many respects: lots of scenery, safe snow conditions and a cosy pace in which daily life takes place. This is why it is so popular with families. The enchanting village lies nestled between the Katschberg and the Aineck at an altitude of 1,065 metres and is surrounded by the villages of Mauterndorf and St. Michael im Lungau, from where you continue on to the Großeck Speiereck ski area. In Sankt Margarethen you can enjoy and relax with a true sense of tranquillity, which is a key characteristic of the place. If you are planning a sporty winter holiday with the whole family and want to avoid mass tourism, this is the right place for you.

St. Michael and the adjacent Grosseck Speiereck ski area with 30km of slopes are just a stone's throw away. These versatile options guarantee an unforgettable winter sports holiday for ambitious sports enthusiasts as well as recreational skiers or snowboarders. Numerous cross-country ski runs have been created for cross-country skiers. The ski bus takes you from St. Margarethen to neighbouring St. Michael or Mauterndorf. If you have a Lungo ski pass, you can use the ski bus free of charge.

A particularly charming contrast results from the fact that the ski areas are all gathered in the Tauern mountains north of Sankt Margarethen, while the view to the south extends to the Gurktaler Alps, which are structured quite differently. You have a view of the so-called Nockberge mountains, which, in contrast to the rather rugged, rocky Tauern mountains, are gently rounded and for the most part wooded.

About the ski resorts

Ski area Katschberg-Aineck
From St. Margarethen you have direct access to the slopes of Katschberg-Aineck (1,100-2,200 metres), which is one of the best skiing areas in Austria. It is ideal for families who want a winter sports holiday without mass tourism. Katschberg-Aineck has 16 ski lifts and 70km of groomed slopes. These are divided as follows: 14% blue slopes, 71% red slopes and 14% black slopes. So there are not only good opportunities to practice here but also to feel your way from beginner to advanced status. The 6km long valley descent from Aineck to St. Margarethen is the perfect end to a successful skiing day!

Ski area Großeck-Speiereck

This modern and snow-sure ski area with direct connections from Mauterndorf and St. Michael im Lungau is considered a real family ski area, which despite all its modernity still radiates a traditional Austrian atmosphere. Großeck-Speiereck (1,100-2,400 metres) has 50km of slopes and 12 ski lifts. In the various convivial "Schirmbars", you can end a sporty day with après-ski. The ski area is varied and offers demanding slopes for beginners as well as for advanced skiers! These are divided as follows: 52% blue slopes, 34% red slopes and 14% black slopes. The long descent to Mauterndorf (4.5km) is highly recommended! For all powder enthusiasts, there are also several nice spots for off-piste skiing.

Ski pass

With the Lungo ski pass, you can ski without limits: This pass gives you access to all Lungau ski areas and small lifts, including the ski areas Obertauern, Großeck-Speiereck, Fanningberg and Katschberg-Aineck. All in all, there are 300km of slopes, all within 20 minutes by car or bus.
As an alternative to the Lungo ski pass, there is the regular ski pass for the Katschberg-Aineck area. In terms of price, it differs little from the Lungo ski pass. The Lungo card has the advantage that one is not bound to the ski area Katschberg-Aineck, providing plenty of options to skiers.

Ski school

In the skiing area of Katschberg-Aineck, there are 5 active ski schools to choose from.

The rental of a sledge costs about 3 euro. The toboggan run is usually illuminated until 22:00 during the season - perfect for those who don't have enough to do in the evening!
