Zillertal Arena (open from 6th December 2024)
The Zillertal Arena is one of Austria’s largest ski areas, renowned for its expansive slopes and panoramic views. Skiing here in December means extra peace on the slopes. In addition, the area transforms into a magical winter world in December. Head to the village of Zell am Ziller for a charming Christmas market (starting 15th December), featuring stalls filled with handmade decorations and local treats like Tiroler Krapfen and mulled wine. Surrounding villages like Königsleiten and Hochkrimml are adorned with lights and Christmas trees, creating a warm atmosphere after a day on the mountain.

Zillertal Arena

 

Wildkogel Arena (Open on the weekend of 6th-8th December and from 13th December 2024)
This ski area near Wald, Neukirchen, and Bramberg offers a picturesque experience, perfect for those who enjoy a relaxed winter sports holiday. In December, Wildkogel Arena transforms into a festive setting, where cosy mountain huts welcome you with Christmas music and local dishes. Christmas markets in Bramberg (7th & 8th December) and Neukirchen am Großvenediger (13th-15th December) offer traditional Austrian crafts and treats, and the villages are decorated like a fairy tale. Don’t miss the torchlit walks in Bramberg (every Thursday from 19th December); these provide a scenic end to the day and a unique experience in the mountains.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Viehhofen (open from 29th November 2024)
Saalbach-Hinterglemm, part of the Ski Circus, offers over 270 kilometres of slopes and is a paradise for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. Starting the season early here means enjoying excellent snow and the tranquillity of the early season. The villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm pull out all the stops to create a cosy Christmas atmosphere, with Christmas lights and countless decorations. A traditional Christmas market is held in Saalbach’s village centre, complete with handmade ornaments, local specialities, and warm drinks to keep you cosy.

KitzSki (open from 7th December 2024)
KitzSki is a classic among ski resorts, offering a wide variety of slopes with breathtaking views. As the holidays approach, the villages around this ski area are transformed into winter wonderlands with lit streets and beautifully decorated homes. The Christmas market in Mittersill (every weekend from 22nd November in the evenings) is a highlight, featuring musical performances, traditional dances, and stalls full of artisan products. After a day of skiing, you can stroll through the town centre, enjoy warm punch, and experience the Alpine Christmas atmosphere.

Kitzbühel & Kirchberg (Kitzski)

 

Hochkönig (open from 6th December 2024)
The Hochkönig ski area, located in Maria Alm, Mühlbach, and Dienten, is perfect for those seeking a cosy winter sports holiday. With 120 kilometres of slopes and plenty of mountain huts, you have everything you need for a comfortable ski experience. In December, the villages are adorned with lights and festive decorations. Maria Alm’s Christmas market (open every weekend from 29th November in the evenings) is particularly charming, with stalls selling local treats, hot chocolate, and mulled wine, all to the sound of traditional Austrian music that brings the holiday spirit to life.

Hochkönig (Ski Amadé)

 

Katschberg and Grosseck-Speiereck (open from 6th December)
The Katschberg and Grosseck-Speiereck ski areas are hidden gems for lovers of a quiet winter sports experience. With a mix of wide slopes, modern lifts, and reliable snow in December, this is an excellent destination to start the ski season. Katschberg, known for its family-friendly atmosphere, offers relaxed skiing and authentic mountain huts where the Christmas spirit is already palpable. A highlight here is the 2.5-kilometre Katschberger Adventweg (from 29th November, every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday). A Christmas market is held in St. Margarethen on 30th November and 7th December. In the charming villages around Grosseck-Speiereck, Christmas markets are held in St. Michael (the first three weekends of December) and Mauterndorf (at Burg Mauterndorf, the first three weekends of December). Additional Christmas markets are also held in Tamsweg (the first three weekends of December).
